Operating
our business in the most ecologically sound manner is of
great importance to us. Here are some of our corporate policies:

Turtle Island Foods has been a long time opponent of the use of genetically engineered foods (aka "foods produced using biotechnology. We vigorously source certified non genetically engineered ingredients from all of our suppliers. In addition to this, in 2007 we are increasing our efforts in this regard by:
1. Testing for GMOs at our plant all incoming shipments of soybeans and soybean based products. We feel that this is necessary due to the risks of inadvertant contamination in the food supply chain in this country as GMO's become more prevalent. Even the organic soybeans and tofu that we buy for all our tempeh and Tofurky
® products are not immune from this threat.
2. We have just become a sponsor of The Campaign, run by long time food activist Craig Winters of Seattle, WA. Here is information on their noble efforts:
The Campaign is a non-profit organization working to get labeling on genetically engineered foods. Currently genetically engineered foods are not required to be labeled in the United States or Canada. However, there are labeling requirements in the 25 European Union nations along with Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, China, Russia and many other countries around the world. In all of the countries that require labeling, companies have chosen to eliminate genetically engineered ingredients out of their products rather than labeling them.
We can anticipate that the same will happen in the United States. At The Campaign's web site, you can find form letters to send to your two U.S. Senators and your House Representative requesting that they support legislation to require the labeling of genetically engineered foods. Plus you can read the latest news in their forums and sign up for free membership in The Campaign. Their web site is found at: www.thecampaign.org

Lastly we give you a photo of an actual can of Tomato Paste.
This was discovered by our company founder on the shelves of a supermarket in the United Kingdom in 1999!
Is this the future we want?

Turtle Island Foods does not use any products processed through hexane extraction.
We use the expeller pressed isolates and concentrates which we believe are a more environmentally responsible option, especially for the natural foods industry.
Non hexane-extracted versions of these ingredients are currently available only in limited quantities and at a substantially higher price, but we think it’s worth it.

Turtle Island Foods is a certified Organic Processor,
registered and inspected by Oregon Tilth Certified Organic
of Salem, Oregon. We use third party certified organic soybeans
and grains wherever possible. Currently our entire line of
Tempeh Products is made with Certified Organic ingredients
and our Tofurky
® products are made with Certified Organic
Tofu.

In December 2005, Turtle Island Foods committed to purchasing 100% of its electricity through the Blue Sky renewable energy project.
By investing in wind power we have reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 252 tons per year.
That reduction is equivalent to the greenhouse gases released during 540,000 miles of driving or absorbed by 47 acres of trees.
Recycling is very important
to us. All of our paperboard packaging
is now made from 100% recycled material. We try hard to produce
products that support the health and vitality of all creatures
and
ecosystems of our "Island" home.
In addition we financially support environmental
groups that are encouraging plant based, vegan diets as
a solution to world environmental concerns. Each year we
donate a portion of our Tofurky product sales to a worthy group.

All of our products are certified vegan by the UK Vegan
Society, use non genetically modified
or organic ingredients and are packed in 100% recycled
paperboard packaging.
All products except Tofurky Feast,
Gravy and Stuffing are kosher certified by Kosher
Services of America. |
