This has been a very challenging year for the planet’s food supply. In particular, grains have been in short supply as we now grow grains for both food for our bodies and fuel for our cars (ethanol). This has led to unprecedented demand and record high grain prices. As a result, global hunger has grown to epidemic proportions. What can we do about this? One idea is to eat less meat!
Guess the number of Tofurky Roasts sold in order to calculate the total pounds of grain saved from eating Tofurky Roasts instead of turkey in the year 2008. If your guess is correct, you will win a new eGO Electric Cycle (www.egovehicles.com)!

Our Grain Saver Contest has ended. Please check back February 15 for the announcement of our winner! |

How to enter:
- First you will need to guess how many Tofurky Roasts will be sold from 1/1/08 to 12/31/08.
Hint: 275,634 Tofurky Roasts were sold in 2007.
- Contest entry form will then automatically multiply by amount of grain saved by eating one Tofurky Roast instead of the equivalent amount of turkey meat (5.77 pounds). This weight will be your official contest entry. Remember to fill out your name and contact information. Only one entry per person please.
- Example: in 2007 Turtle Island Foods sold 275,634 roasts. Multiply this times
5.77 lbs and you get a total of 1,590,408.18 pounds of grain saved!
Here is our math:
- Amount of Tofurky® (does not include the stuffing) in one roast: 21 oz
- Amount of grain to make 21 oz of Tofurky Roast: 0.62 pounds
- Amount of grain needed to make 21 oz of Turkey meat: 6.39 pounds
- Amount of grain saved by eating 21 oz of Tofurky instead of 21 oz of turkey: 5.77 lbs (6.39 lbs - 0.62 lbs = 5.77 lbs)

- All grain ratios and numbers used in this contest are final. They were arrived at via our own research from independent organizations and Turtle Island Foods internal information and recipes. We realize that agricultural practices vary and that not all turkey producer’s yields will fall exactly into this formula. These are numbers deemed to be as accurate as possible and are used to illustrate a general point. We make no attempt to neither intentionally mislead nor misrepresent the public nor intentionally disparage any industry or processor. We do believe that if the world is going to try and grow both food and fuel from our fields of grain, economies and efficiencies of scale will have to be examined carefully.
