Sustainability

In December 2005, we committed to purchase 100% of our electricity through Pacific Powers Blue Sky renewable energy program.

By purchasing Blue Sky power in the last year, we have reduced our own emissions by 3,227,567 pounds of CO2. That is equivalent to:

  • Taking 268 passenger vehicles off the road
  • Not using 166,230 gallons of gasoline or 3,406 barrels of oil

All of our paperboard packaging is made with 100% recycled materials.

We have worked diligently for 30 years to educate consumers about the environmental, health and social aspects of eating less meat. According to Jaime Athos, PhD, Turtle Island Foods’ Manager of Environmental Affairs, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions reduced by going meatless just one day a week is equal to the amount released when you drive a car that averages 20 mpg for 16.5 miles. If you reduce your meat consumption by only 20% (only six meatless days a month!) the energy saved will be equivalent to that saved when you switch from driving a sedan car to a hybrid vehicle.

We know that by eating meatless, even just one day per week, you can reduce your carbon footprint dramatically. Consider it takes 16 pounds of grain and soy to produce one pound of beef and only eight ounces of soybeans are needed to make one pound of tempeh; additionally, 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions are a direct result of meat production.
